Subject 5. Master of Science Thesis

30 ECTS
The Master of Science Thesis will be an original research project carried out by the student on a subject proposed by the Master’s Study Commission, supervised by a tutor (with a PhD degree), also approved by the Commission. Exceptionally, students may propose another director or laboratory with a solid international scientific reputation, subject to approval by the Commission.

Noelia Ibáñez Escriche (UPV)

PhD in Agricultural Engineering specialised in quantitative genetics in livestock species, she has worked in several R&D institutions gathering experience at national and international level. In 2018 she joined the UPV with the idea of continuing to develop her career and is currently a professor in the Department of Animal Science and Technology.

Josep Maria Folch Albareda (UAB)

I have worked in the application of molecular genetics techniques in animal breeding of different livestock species including pigs, goats, cows, and rabbits. In the last years, I have focused my work in the analysis of QTLs (Quantitative Trait Loci), genes and gene networks affecting economically relevant traits in pigs with the goal of contributing to its genetic improvement. I have a special interest on the study of the genetic determination of meat quality and fatty acid metabolism in pigs using multiomics approaches.

Andrés Schlageter Tello (CIHEAM)

Veterinarian and PhD in Animal Science. Since 1990 is an administrator of the area of Animal Production and Welfare at CIHEAM Zaragoza. His main responsibilities are the coordination of the master's programmes in Animal Nutrition and Animal Breeding and Reproduction Biotechnology and the coordination of advanced courses for professionals in collaboration with national and international institutions such as INIA-CSIC , FAO, PRIMA Foundation, GRA, ICARDA, and several EU projects with participants from all over the world.

Postgraduate Specialisation Diploma. At the end of the first part of the Master, participants that have successfully completed the programme and obtained 60 ECTS will receive the Postgraduate Specialisation Diploma awarded by CIHEAM.

CIHEAM Master of Science Degree. CIHEAM will award the Master of Science Degree to participants that have obtained the necessary grades and accredit 120 ECTS. This Master of Science degree is equivalent to the official Master degree of the Spanish University System. Together with the Postgraduate Specialisation Diploma and Master of Science, CIHEAM issues the corresponding Diploma Supplements providing information on the qualification type and level, the content of the course and grades obtained.

The UPV will award the Official Interuniversity Master’s Degree, together with the UAB, to students that have obtained 120 credits.

A new edition of the Master is held biennially, therefore enrolment in Part One of the programme takes place every two years. The IX edition will start in October 2024 and end in June 2026 and the X edition will run from October 2026 to June 2028.

Part One of the Master is designed for approximately 20 participants fulfilling the following requirements:

  • Eligibility to pursue postgraduate studies in their country of origin or accrediting the equivalent of 240 ECTS in graduate studies.
  • A degree in agronomy, veterinary science, biology, biotechnology or other related subjects.
  • Knowledge of genetics and statistics. Previous professional experience in this field is valued.

Spanish and English are the working languages of the Master, Spanish being the main language of instruction. Knowledge of Spanish and English will be taken into consideration when selecting candidates.
Applicants from non-Spanish-speaking countries should accredit knowledge of Spanish at B1 level or higher, as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Candidates from non-English-speaking countries should accredit knowledge of English at A2 level or higher.

Applicants that have not finished their university studies or need prior authorisation to participate in the Master may be accepted on a provisional basis.

Any applicants interested in taking subjects in the Master programme but without leading to a diploma may enrol in the number of credits they wish.

CIHEAM Zaragoza organizes an intensive Spanish course online, starting in the first week of July 2024. This course is compulsory for students from non-Spanish speaking countries that are unable to accredit a B1 level of Spanish or higher.

Applications must be accompanied by:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Copy of the university diploma. Candidates in their final year of studies will be asked to provide a certificate stating the expected date of completion.
  • Academic record (stating subjects taken and grades obtained).
  • Other supporting documents that the candidates may consider of interest, especially if they have any language knowledge certificates.

Supporting documents will be accepted in Spanish, English or French.

CIHEAM Zaragoza will provide successful candidates with instructions to formalise registration.

APPLICATIONS FROM SPANISH STUDENTS AND EU STUDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH

Applicants from Spain and applicants from EU countries with knowledge of Spanish may pre-register on the website: https://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/mastersoficiales/592623normalc.html.

Registration fees are approximately 2400* euro per academic year for EU students and 3500* euro per academic year for non-EU students.

(*) This fee is orientative and may be updated according to the official rates established each year by the Generalitat de Valencia through the Council Decree.

Part One of the Master will be held from 7 October 2024 to 13 June 2025.
Part Two of the Master will begin in September 2025 and will run for approximately 10 months.

APPLICATIONS FROM NON-EU STUDENTS**

Candidates from non-EU countries may submit their application until 5 May 2024.

CIHEAM Zaragoza will provide successful candidates with instructions before the start of the Master on how to formalise registration.

(**) Applicants from non-EU countries are advised to check visa application deadlines. Successful candidates should make visa arrangements well in advance at their nearest Spanish embassy or consulate.

APPLICATIONS FROM SPANISH STUDENTS AND EU STUDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH

Spanish candidates and Spanish-speaking candidates from EU member countries may pre-register on the following dates:

  • Phase 1: 1 March to 3 May 2024
  • Phase 2: 17 June to 28 June 2024
  • Phase 3: 29 July to 2 August and 26 August to 6 September 2024
  • Candidates from CIHEAM member countries (Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Türkiye) may request a CIHEAM Zaragoza scholarship when they make their application: http://www.admission.iamz.ciheam.org. Scholarships are awarded according to academic merit. Priority will be given to applicants from low, medium and medium-high income CIHEAM member countries according to the World Bank: Albania, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Türkiye.

    There are two types of scholarship:

    • Scholarships including the registration fee, intensive online Spanish course, a monthly payment of 750 euros and health insurance for Spain covering the academic period.
    • Exemption from the payment of registration fees.

    Candidates from Latin America may apply for a scholarship covering all or part of the registration fee and board and lodging expenses.

    According to the agreement between INIA-CSIC and CIHEAM Zaragoza, INIA-CSIC may finance partial participation of students.
